The original Left Book Club was founded in the United Kingdom in the 1930s to encourage thinking and discussion on left-wing ideas amongst a wider audience. A panel chose a book and sent the selected books to subscribing members on a monthly basis.
Unfortunately it no longer exists but it got me thinking, what would be on a modern day Left Book Club reading list?
My own choices for such a reading list would be a mix of recent and classics books, including:
“Ill Fares the Land” by Tony Judt
“The Great Transformation” by Karl Polanyi
“Future of Socialism” by Anthony Crosland
“Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals” by Saul Alinsky
“23 Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism” by Ha-Joon Chang
“Don’t Think of an Elephant!” by George Lakoff
“The Primacy of Politics: Social Democracy and the Making of Europe’s Twentieth Century” by Sheri Berman
Any other suggestions for a modern day Left Book Club reading list?
