Robinson’s points out that introducing primaries in Australia won’t lead to a situation where an ALP primary contest is based on policy. He uses Hare-Clarke with Robson rotation as an example something comparable to a primary election that exists here.

Using Tasmania as an example, he points out that it hasn’t lead to a breakdown in party discipline in Parliament at all or differentiation based on policy. It effectively becomes a glorified beauty contest.

So long as the ALP has strong discipline and binds, not even primaries will change it.

  1. screwrocknroll said: Yeah, I read the post. He was talking about a specific primary model that is a meagre improvement on what the ALP has now. Primaries can be like beauty contests, but that’s because they’re more influenced by campaign effects.
